Singaporean food + Avocado Chimichurri + HTC EVO 4G

2 Jun avocado chimichurri

The weather is finally warming up although nights are still brisk here in San Mateo. We went to visit a friend in Menlo Park in hopes of having dinner and seeing a movie after. We ended up eating out and then sitting at her place talking while petting her cats. She has two boy kitties almost the same color as my cats! I should have taken pictures. She took us out to have Singaporean food, which was delicious.

The restaurant was called Shiok! and has a large menu with many delicious sounding dishes. They had many desserts too but we didn’t splurg. The serving sizes are normal, meaning that you can finish it in one sitting without bursting your stomach unlike most other restaurant serving sizes.

I (a.k.a Athena – I got cast as Athena from BSG because Brian was Helo..) got the Hor Fun because it’s my favorite noodle. Hor fun is a broad rice noodle and can be cooked “dry” or in soups. This one was cooked in a egg gravy with veggies and seafood (squid and shrimp). I didn’t love the gravy but the dish was tasty overall.

Brian (a.k.a. Helo) got the Singaporean Chicken and Rice, which I know as the hoy nam gai fan from Malaysian restaurants I used to go to in Brooklyn. I LOVE the rice, it’s cooked in chicken broth and aromatics.. super flavorful. The chicken is served room temperature with dipping sauces (soy, ginger, chili). There are also cucumbers under the chicken so they catch the chicken drippings. Chicken broth on the side but it was very oily so uneaten. Pictures like this makes me hate my camera because I cannot tell from the screen that they’re blurry. =( My camera is old.

Our friend Anya (a.k.a. Starbuck) got the vegetarian Mee Goreng. This dish was really, really good. If I get to go back, I might have to get this one. Chock full of veggies in a yummy tomatoe-y sauce.

For lunch today, I made avocado chimichurri because I have lots of parsley to use up from the CSA box. It turned out delicious even though I don’t like parsley. I followed this recipe but halved it, substituted sushi vinegar, added a chopped scallion, and left out the jalapeno simply because I didn’t have any. I put it on a half a sourdough torpedo with pan fried zucchini and pickled carrots. It was super satisfying and the flavors were so bright. I think the sweetness from the pickled carrots and sushi vinegar really makes it better.

Onto something not food related…

Look at this awesome phone! Brian went to Google I/O a few weeks ago and got a “free” HTC EVO 4G (there was a registration fee). I’ve been using it for the past week and a half and we just realized yesterday that it wasn’t even on the market yet! Haha, now I feel special. It comes out June 4th for $199 with contract from Sprint. =( I don’t have Sprint. It’s currently running on a month’s subscription of voice and data service.

It’s soooooo fast and really sexy. The screen is huge and super responsive. It’s an android phone and has “4G” service (4G in quotes because nothing is truly 4G yet). Only drawbacks so far is that the battery life is short since it can do so much; the four menu buttons are too responsive in that I accidentally touch them by just holding the phone; GPS sucks compared to iPhone; and it’s a bit less intuitive to use than the iPhone so it has a bigger learning curve for non-tech savy people.

a lot bigger than my Env3 but sleeker

Check out this review by IntoMobile for a more in depth look and more pics. I want one! Ugh.. too bad my phone plan doesn’t end for a long time.

Boring bentos (18-20)

21 Mar

I don’t like posting boring bentos when I have nicer, more visually appealing things to post.. but I have to keep counting so here they are. They’re not boring in taste but nothing fancy and took minimal effort to pack and photograph.

bento 18
Indian/Moroccan bento: leftover chickpea curry, lamb tagine, rice, salad with goddess dressing and girl scout thin mints (gift from Amanda) and dove chocolate.

bento 19
Sushi and snack box: homemade sushi with random fillings by mom and oranges, cuties and a white peach jelly.

bento 20
Steak and cheesy potato dinner with broccoli and rice. Ranch dressing on the side.

Now that spring is here, the weather has been super nice. Sunny days make for brighter pictures but there are no good places near windows for me to take photos. This results in overly bright photos as you can see. Alas, I don’t have the time to spend on practicing setting up nicer photos. Maybe I’ll have more time in the summer to make an effort. It’s good enough I can get a picture before I fly out the door.

Sorta Irish bento (bento 17)

15 Mar

Spring break has started which means procrastination time. Bento backlog from last week.

bento 17
Rice with furikake, corn beef, corn, carrots, wonton, homemade chocolate hazelnut macaron.

Bento 10 – Indian style

10 Feb

Bento for dinner last night at work. Everyone kept talking about snow snow snow because a storm was supposed to hit at midnight. Woke up this morning to only 2 inches on the ground. Classes were not canceled for NYU even though most other schools had closed the day before. Finally, NYU decides to close mid-day. Pretty annoying when schools do that since some people had to go out already in the morning just to go home later in the day. Poor planning. The snow is really coming down hard now. It’s beautiful, like someone dumping confectioner’s sugar over everything. I can’t wait to go out and shovel later. Shoveling is my excuse to play in the snow. Thank goodness I don’t have class or work tomorrow so I don’t have to deal with the slush.

This bento was quite yummy.
bento 10
White rice with red bean, lentil, tomato based curry (Tasty Bite); honey roasted ham and muenster wheat bread roll-ups; homemade momofuku berry and cream cookies (see previous post)

Bento 7 & 8

4 Feb

Lack of time to update so two bentos for you this time. Laptop lunch was yesterday’s dinner at work and onigiri were for class today.

bento 7
Quinoa pilaf with veggies, chicken and walnuts, salad with Trader Joe’s goddess dressing, cucumbers and tomatoes, veggie straws (rosemary), string cheese.

bento 8
Wasabi mayo tuna onigiri with furikake. Nori on the side for wrapping. I didn’t expect to eat all three because I don’t usually eat that much rice but I was hungry and class was boring.

Bento 4

25 Jan

It was raining cats and dogs this morning! I borrowed rain boots and took a giant umbrella and went out to buy cucumber and avocado for sushi. Looked at rain boots too but nothing really stood out. I will have to check out Century 21 next. I have class until 9:15pm today. =( I managed to take a nice photo because the rain stopped and the sun is shining. What a day.

bento 4
Smoked salmon sushi rolls with egg, avocado, cucumbers, carrots and toasted sesame seeds.

Bento 3

22 Jan

Work tomorrow so bento for lunch. Nothing exciting unfortunately because I was lazy and just packed leftovers. New box though, Mamegoma box that I bought in California.

bento 3
Rice, beef pot roast (cooked in the slow cooker) with gravy, some type of spinach, homemade Chinese sausage (very difficult to make btw), and veggies cooked with the roast (potatoes, carrots, etc).
