Fish Tank update

20 Oct

I finally added fish. I bought three neon tetras because they’re so bright looking. I was thinking that I would get some cherry barbs at the time but now that is no longer an option. I realized that my poor Twitchy (the betta fish I had in a small tank) was freezing in his heaterless tank. I decided to save him by putting him in the big heated tank but bettas don’t do well with neon tetras – the betta’s fins will get bitten. Discovered that my local fish store, petland discounts, sells tank dividers for $12! So I did some research and found a really cheap DIY divider using plastic mesh sheets that I already had and some report cover binding things from the 99cents store (you can also find them at office stores like staples). Here are some pictures.

Supplies: plastic mesh sheet, report cover binding pieces, ruler, sissors

In the tank. The tetras are on the left and Twitchy is on the right. He’s hard to see.. kinda dark blue color in the back corner.

Edit:
My dad found an old rectangular lamp in the basement. It happens to fit my tank! SCORE! He tried to remove the base but it wasn’t possible because it had a transformer embedded inside so he extended the wires. The base rests on the stand below now. Perfect.

Fish tank!

8 Oct

fish tank
I decided to raise tropical fish again since my parents aren’t ever going to let me get a cat. I already everything you see here since I used to raise zebra fish and some other (tetras maybe) about four years ago in my freshman dorm room. Included here is the 10 gallon tank along with the heater, filter system, thermometer, rocks, and air pump. I’ve been doing some research on fishlore.com and have learned SO much about properly raising fish. You have to let the tank go through the nitrogen cycle first before you actually put any fish in the tank or else they have a high chance of dieing or getting sick. Fish produce ammonium which is highly toxic and without cycling there is no beneficial bacteria to remove the ammonium. Cycling without fish (the more humane way to do it) can take months! Hopefully mine won’t take so long. I have to go buy some water testing kits… and a gravel cleaner.. and more plants!

Oh yeah, I’m thinking of getting neon tetras, cherry barbs, and prob a small type of catfish to eat algae.

Last of tomatoes and roast beef sammich

7 Sep

A lovely, shiney picture of the last (okay, maybe second to last) batch of tomatoes from my plants.

They were so pretty I had to share. Ate some in a roast beef sandwich with basil, mayo, country dijon mustard, and lettuce. Yum.

Purple Divine Hat

26 Aug

My sister bought me some cascade yarn part of my graduation present. It’s been sitting around for a few months but I finally found a pattern I wanted to try. That’s the divine hat. Turned out quite nice I think.

The pattern is by rheatheylia and can be found here.

Items Needed:
Less than 3oz. of WW yarn
K hook for body
I hook for ribbing

Gauge:3 dc with K hook = 1″ Height isn’t important because you can just add on rounds

To join each round: join with slip stitch around the first front post double crochet of previous round (or beginning ch 2 of the first round), ch 2, then fpdc down into the same front post double crochet you just did the slip stitch to (again, this will be a ch 2 for the beginning round). This pushes the ch 2 behind the fpdc you just made (ignore the ch 2, it doesn’t exist). This isn’t necessary, but it looks better than a standard ch2 and makes the join less obvious.

1. 15 dc in ring
2. Fpdc in every dc (15)
3. Fpdc in every fpdc, dc in the space between fpdcs (15 fpdc, 15 dc)
4. Fpdc in every fpdc, dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 dc)
5. Fpdc in every fpdc, 2 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 2dc)
6. Fpdc in every fpdc, 2 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 2dc)
7. Fpdc in every fpdc, 3 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 3dc)
8. Fpdc in every fpdc, 3 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 3dc)
9. Fpdc in every fpdc, 3 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 3dc)
10. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
11. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
12. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
13. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
14. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
15. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
16. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)

17. Sc around (75)
18. Fpdc in one st, bpdc in the next, around (75 sts)
19. Fpdc in one st, bpdc in the next, around (75 sts)
20. Fpdc in one st, bpdc in the next, around (75 sts)
21. Fpdc in one st, bpdc in the next, around (75 sts)

I stopped at row 19 and added a row of single crochet because it was long enough for my head. Yarn was Cascade 220 The Heathers in purple (3.5 g – 220 yds) and I use almost the whole hank. Made with size J hook instead of K because I don’t own a K.

I think this one is quite beautiful too.

Sewing projects – Yoga mat bag, Pincushion and Frame

19 Aug

yoga mat bag

I made a yoga mat bag for my sister. She’s going back to college again and needed something to carry the mat around. I used this tutorial and the fabric was from Ikea. I love this fabric! It’s a light canvas and is only $6 a yard.

The pincushion was made to attach to the sewing machine with velcro. Made from scrap fabric and polyfill. You can see the hello kitty stickers we have on the machine. 😉

The frames were from ikea as well. Covered with scrap fabric and hot glue. I think it’s so cute. My sister made this.

Angel Kitty

12 Aug

Look what Moawk sent me in Craftster’s One Tiny Thing (OTT 19) Swap! She crocheted a super cute kitty that looks like craftyalien’s knit swat team kitties. She sewed on the felt stripes and attached angel wings! I love it so much.

And since I took the picture outside, here’s a picture of my “garden” fully grown now. You can notice my overgrown basil that are flowering, the ripening tomatoes, and some green bell peppers. There’s also some yellowing jalapeno peppers in the front. Did you know they turn red if you put them in the fridge? I wonder why? Haven’t tasted the red ones yet.
